DVD/VCD reviews

Harano Sur (Channel B; VCD Rs 199) by Ajay Kar is a Uttam Kumar-Suchitra Sen classic. Films like these made them the romantic icons that they are. Their pairing looked awesome, their chemistry superb. Moreover, songs also contributed to their stardom making them the most romantic duo that people still swear by. Uttam Kumar, is the patient, who’s lost his memory. Suchitra Sen the doctor who brings him out of the darkness of the blank mind. During this time both fall in love and they also get married. But another accident brings back Uttam’s past memory making him completely forget his present life with Suchitra. Uttam returns home. But the irony of the situation gets unbearable for Suchitra. She follows him to his house as a govorness of Uttam’s brother’s child and works towards bringing back his memory of her. The film won a National Award for their breathtaking performances.

Kamallata (Channel B; VCD Rs 149) directed by Harisadhan Dasgupta is yet another example of Uttam-Suchitra magic onscreen. Based on Saratchandra Chattopadhyay’s novel, the film also stars Nirmal Kumar, Pahari Sanyal, Geeta Dey, Jahar Ray and Tarun Kumar. Now also available in VCD.

Ami Shei Shakha (Angel; VCD Rs 199) tells a love story, but not of the usual kind where boy meets girl, fall in love and the rest follows. This love knows not acceptance but only sacrifice. Starring Uttam Kumar in a double role, this film has a very offbeat story. Uttam meets Kaberi Basu, a history research student, and likes her. He is a doctor by profession but is not rich. In fact, he was brought up in a friend’s (Anil Chatterjee) house. His impression about the rich hasn’t been nice either. His brother, also played by Uttam Kumar, is a very meritorious student. But a superrich, superbrat of a student strips him of his dignity and respect by falsely implicating him with the charge of molesting her. And consequently he has turned insane.

His brother, Uttam, thus carries a great burden in his heart. On Uttam’s insistence Kaberi Basu marries his best friend Anil Chatterjee. Uttam not only takes his brother’s revenge on Arati Bhattacharya, he also makes a supreme sacrifice for the two people he loves most. To save Anil from a scandal he takes the entire blame on himself and goes to jail. He proves himself to be a man worth worshipping. Power-packed performance from Uttam Kumar here.

It was time that kids had their way, though when did they not have their way! So, Shemaroo thoughtfully strings together 12 lispy songs from Hindi films in Chhupa Chhupi Khelen Aao (VCD, Rs 66). Sa re ke sa re from Parichay is an obvious starter and stops the fun riot at the Na maangun sona chaandi parody in Mr India. Interestingly, there are a couple of b/w clips like Ichak daana bichak daana (Shri 420) and Nanhe munne bachche (Boot Polish) and the famous Ashok Kumar Rail gaadi chhuk chhuk from Ashirwad.
