Knight from city felicitated

Permanent secretary in the British government’s department for international development (DFID) Sir Suma Chakrabarti was felicitated by the Calcutta Municipal Corporation on Wednesday. Addressing a reception hosted in his honour by mayor Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharyya, Sir Suma said the British government’s financial assistance would help alleviate poverty in Calcutta. Citing the poverty-alleviation example of Bangkok, he said “a similar success is possible here”.

The DFID, he pointed out, is working in over 150 countries with a budget of around £5,000 million. ir Suma, who was knighted in 2006, attended the reception with wife Mari Sako and daughter Maya. Poet Nirendranath Chakrabarti attended the programme as special guest.

Suicide at home

Gautam Bhowmick, 42, committed suicide by hanging himself at his Shatchashipara Road residence, in Cossipore, on Wednesday morning. Police said he was taken to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Setu blocked

Around 300 Youth Congress supporters blocked Vidyasagar Setu for around 40 minutes on Wednesday morning to protest land acquisition in Singur. Police said the roadblock started around 10 am. The protesters, who were shouting slogans against chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, were dispersed by police.

Liquor seizure

A team from the excise department seized 890 l of spurious liquor, worth Rs 21,000, from various pockets in Thakurpukur and Behala on Tuesday. Officers said the raids were carried out following tip-offs by local residents. No one was arrested.

Scholarships

Jagadish Bose National Science Talent Search on Wednesday awarded junior and senior scholarships to students from West Bengal and the Northeast. The award for the best school of the year in West Bengal went to South Point High School.

Body found

The mutilated body of an autorickshaw driver, Sanjay Das, 25, was recovered from the premises of a building under construction on Upen Banerjee Road, in Behala, on Wednesday. Police said the body bore multiple injuries. A murder case has been initiated.
