A brush with nature
It’s all happening: (Top) A breathtaking view of Sikkim, and actress June Maliah

On November 28, 2006, Maria’s Public School organised an excursion to west Sikkim for the students of Class IX. It was a trekking expedition of five days and four nights for 63 students, escorted by four teachers. After the exhausting 45-km trek we reached a height of above 10,200 feet. It was an unforgettable experience, trekking through the hills and crossing deep rivers in the darkness of the night. We were very lucky to be able to catch clear glimpses of the Kanchenjunga throughout our trip. We also had a taste of the pure water from the mountain streams. We had to sit in front of a bonfire at night as the temperature dipped to below zero degree, warming ourselves with lively songs and dances.

CALCUTTA
Living a dream

The slogan for Umang 2006 was “You dream it, we theme it”. Students from more than 35 colleges across the country lived their dreams at this inter-college fest organised by Bhawanipur College last month. The participants of the week-long fiesta included colleges like Narsee Monjee, Hansraj and St Xaviers’ Mumbai.

Local celebrity June Maliah inaugurated the event, along with the mayor of Calcutta, Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya. Channel V covered the entire fest live with VJ Archana hosting the events.

The inaugural dance by 60 young dancers took our breath away. On the last day we had our Prom Nite at the RCGC grounds, in which DJ Kiran of the Kya mujhe pyar hain fame got the crowd jiving to his remixes. Bhawanipur College was given the first prize, which they handed over to the first runner up St Xavier’s College. Narsee Monjee College stood third.

It’s playtime

On December 9, 2006, St Patrick’s HS School held its annual sports. For the first time we had a mascot, Pat, the bumblebee. The event began with the sportsman’s prayer and the inter-house march past. The chief guest, A.K. Rawal, the divisional railway manager of Eastern Railways, lit the torch. After this there was a series of events, like relays, inter-house races and the inter-school race for boys and girls. We also had an ex-student’s race and an event for the school staff. Yellow House was the winner of the tug-of-war. The ‘Best house’ trophy went to Blue House and Yellow House was declared the best in the march past.
