Fourth div. team in League Cup semis

Madrid: David Villa scored his eighth goal of the season Tuesday to help Valencia beat Mallorca 3-1 for their third straight victory in the Primera Liga. Vicente Rodriguez and substitute Fernando Morientes also scored for Valencia, which continued their recovery from a six-game winless streak.

Also, Zaragoza climbed into fourth place by drawing 0-0 at Athletic Bilbao. Sevilla lead the league with 34 points, while FC Barcelona have 33 with a game in hand. Real Madrid are next with 32 points. Zaragoza, Atletico and Valencia all have 27. Barcelona host Atletico Madrid on Thursday.

In England, fourth division outfit Wycombe Wanderers shocked Premier League strugglers Charlton Athletic 1-0 away also on Tuesday to reach the League Cup semi-finals.

Jermaine Easter, who has scored in every round, got the winner after 35 minutes with a fine shot from outside the area after Charlton keeper Scott Carson had made several saves.

Wycombe, who reached the FA Cup semi-finals in 2001, had already beaten Fulham in this season’s League Cup. They are managed by former Celtic midfielder Paul Lambert, who won the Champions League with Borussia Dortmund on 1997.

Liverpool’s quarter final with Arsenal was postponed because of heavy fog at Anfield.
