DVD/VCD reviews

With the Christmas spirit still on, this Bengali VCD, Mahamanab Jesu (DJ’s Digital; Rs 99), an animation film, can be a great gift for your children if you want them to know about the life of the Son of God. Miracles have always been a part of a saint’s life and many miraculous stories are told about Him. Jesus Christ is said to have given life to the dead, sight to the blind, freed his people from leprosy, he is even said to have walked on water establishing again and again that He is no ordinary Being. He has been put to test to establish that a great many times. Here 12 such miracles from Jesus Christ’s life have been included in this VCD, all presented in well conceived animation. The voices in Bengali are provided by Kaushik Sen, Ujjwal Bhattacharjee and Sohini Sengupta. The animation and graphics are done by Partha Priya Debnath.Along with the VCD there are two stickers of Jesus Christ and Mother Mary.

Tapan Sinha’s Atanka (Channel B; VCD Rs 199) with story, screenplay and music also by Sinha) is based on a true story. The winner of seven prestigious awards, Atanka highlights how a freak incident completely turns the peaceful life of a teacher, Soumitra Chatterjee, into a life full of fear. He chances upon a murder committed by one of his students. To keep this honest teacher from going to the police, the goons keep scaring the daylights out of the poor man and his family. Soumitra Chatterjee as well as Satabdi Roy play their parts really well.
