Death bid in court

Burdwan, Jan. 31: A 35-year-old man tried to commit suicide inside the Katwa subdivisional court today after police allegedly refused to file his complaint.

Ananda Mondal of Panchghara village consumed pesticides and stumbled into the courtroom while a case was being heard. The police took him to hospital, where doctors said his condition was critical.

Sadhu jailed

Krishnagar: A fast- track court in Nadia’s Ranaghat has sentenced a sadhu to two-and-a-half-years’ rigorous imprisonment for attempting to rape a two-and-a-half-year-old. Prashanta Das, 40, had kidnapped the girl in October 2004.
