Minister unveils flyover plan

A flyover will soon come up on the EM Bypass, between Parama Island and Bridge No. 4, in Park Circus. “Funds for the project — to be implemented through public-private partnership — will come from the Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission,” industries minister Nirupam Sen said on Wednesday.

Civic tax on cricket

The Calcutta Municipal Corporation (CMC) has decided to charge entertainment tax on tickets sold for cricket matches at Eden Gardens stadium. Mayoral council member Faiyaz Ahmed Khan said on Wednesday that the civic authorities are empowered to charge the tax, though the ground belongs to the army.

Stadium water

The civic water supply department on Wednesday collected water samples for testing from the Eden Gardens stadium, in view of the India-Sri Lanka ODI on February 8. Municipal commissioner Alapan Bandyopadhyay said 21 samples were collected from all the blocks of the stadium. The test report will be ready by Friday.

Run over

Dulal Sarkar, 75, died after being run over by a truck near the Rashbehari connector, in Kasba, on Wednesday morning. Police said Sarkar was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The truck was seized, but the driver fled.

Suicide

Jharna Sengupta, 59, committed suicide at her KP Roy Lane home in Kasba on Wednesday. Police said she had been suffering from depression.

Shop fire

A fire broke out in a decorator’s shop in Sealdah on Wednesday afternoon. Fire brigade sources said two tenders fought for an hour to control the blaze. There was no injury or casualty.

Workshop

The state women’s commission and its national counterpart will organise a two-day workshop from Thursday to discuss the draft action plan to prevent and combat human trafficking. It will be held at Jadavpur University’s HL Roy Auditorium.

Trade fair

Finance minister Asim Dasgupta will inaugurate an industrial trade fair in Baruipur, on the southern fringes of the city, on February 2.
