National English School celebrated its 7th Annual Sports Meet on January 6, 2007. India’s former football captain Monoranjan Bhattacharya was the chief guest and Maidul Islam, another accomplished footballer, was the guest of honour. The opening ceremony was quiet but colourful. It was followed by yoga, aerobics, karate and a dance performance using sticks and ribbons. The races were no less interesting. A balance race, a sack race, a flat race, a spoon and marble race, you name it and they had it. There was also a painting competition, a fancy dress competition, slow cycling, shot put and other competitions organised by the school management. The evening ended with a grand prize distribution ceremony.

Seminar wisdom
A one-day seminar on ‘US experiments with growth — lessons for India’ was held at the department of business administration, the University of Burdwan, on January 18, 2007. James E. Hartley, an associate professor of economics, Mount Holyoke College, US, was the speaker. Prof. Amit Kumar Mallick, vice-chancellor, inaugurated the seminar. The day-long seminar was divided into two sessions. In the first part, Hartley presented an in-depth analysis of the topic where he drew a comparison between the Indian and the US economies and identified the factors that determine the economic growth of a country. The second session was interactive and quite interesting.
