| To lose weight in the hips and thighs one needs to exercise |
Q: My exams are about to begin. But I simply can not remember anything that I have learnt. How can I improve my memory?
A: The pathways of the electrical circuits in the brain become more efficient with repeated use. So, to remember the learnt stuff, youll have to revise several times. Concepts should be clear so that you are able to analyse the problem and work out solutions efficiently. Cut down on television viewing, as the rapid images flashed on the screen tend to saturate the brains neurotransmitters, which in turn will affect your memory.
Helpful bacteria
Q: I was on a heavy dose of antibiotics for fever. The fever has subsided but my stomach feels bloated and uncomfortable. I am unable to digest any food and feel full after eating only a little. Please advise.
A: The digestive tract has some commensal bacteria which live there and help in digestion. I suppose the antibiotics you were on killed these beneficial bacteria along with those causing your illness. You have to re-populate them in your intestines. One way to do this naturally is to take a tablespoon of fresh natural curd on an empty stomach every morning for about 10 days. Alternatively, you can take capsules or sachets containing oflactobacillus. Its the same bacteria found in curd.
Menopause
Q: I am 54 years old and my wife younger. However, I do not know her exact age. We have three children, the youngest being 10 years old. We have been using condoms since then. My wifes menstrual cycle stopped three years back. Can we stop using contraception?
A: If menstruation has stopped three years back, it means menopause has set in. To confirm this, you need to get a blood test done to estimate the level of FSH (follicle stimulating hormone). If the level is low, its safe to have intercourse without contraception.
Prickly problem
Q: I have itchy rashes all over my body, which appear and disappear spontaneously. I have tried both allopathic and homeopathic medications. I now find that the itching increases when I go out in the sun. What should I do?
A: Allergy to sunlight is a common phenomenon. You need to apply sunscreen (SPF 15) in the morning before going out in the sun. But dont forget to wash it off at night.
Weight loss
Q: My grandmother said I could massage my hips and thighs during winter to lose weight. Is this true?
A: Massaging oil will help to keep your skin soft, supple and blemish free. But to lose weight, you will have to exercise.
Contraception
Q: My wife and I have a six-week-old daughter. We do not want another child for two years. What contraception should we use?
A: Your wife can have an IUCD (intrauterine contraceptive device) inserted by a gynaecologist. It can be left in place for three years. Or, she can take Depo provera injections every 12 weeks for as long as you desire protection. Alternatively, she can be on progesterone pills like Cerazette. You can also try using condoms.
Soya row
Q: Is it safe to consume soya?
A: The consumption of soya is mired in controversy. Excess soya intake does interfere with the normal functioning of thyroid hormones, especially in children. Women with breast, uterine or ovarian cancer should avoid it as it contains phytoestrogens (plant oestrogens). However, it is a good source of protein and helps in combating menopause problems.
Old habit
Q: Some people (including me) shake their legs vigorously while sitting. Why?
A: Shaking the legs is an irritating habit like chewing nails or sucking the thumb. It is often unconscious. It has to be voluntarily controlled.
Panic attacks
Q: I am a computer engineer. I suffer from palpitations and a reeling sensation even if the slightest thing goes wrong. All my tests and ECG are normal. What should I do?
A: I think there may be something wrong with the position of the computer screen, height of the table and chair and the general ergonomic design of the office furniture. Adjust all that if possible, so that you are able to work comfortably. Take frequent breaks and stretch. Jog every day, do neck and wrist exercises at least twice in the office, and soon you will see the mild palpitation, panic attacks and giddiness do the disappearing act.
