Whale facts

Can you imagine eating without your teeth? What happens when you lose a tooth or two or when babies begin to get their teeth? But whales do not have teeth! Then how on earth do they eat?

Humpback, fin, blue and baleen whales have whalebone instead of teeth. Whalebones act as amazing filters. When the whale gulps in water, it strains out crustaceans and other marine life forms while allowing shrimps, krills and planktons to enter its mouth. Whales need tonnes and tonnes of such micro-organisms to survive. In other words, for the whales to survive, we have to ensure that the smallest organisms (their food) survive in plenty.

Another interesting fact about whales is that they breathe through the blowholes located on their head instead of gills. Although they are massive in size, their sleek, streamlined bodies makes it possible for them to move easily through the water.
