I started playing chess when I was six years old. I won the National Sub-Junior Chess Championship at the age of 14 and also became the first Asian to win the World Junior Championship. I am the first Indian to win the Grandmaster title. I won the Padmashri Award in 1987 and have recently upstaged the world Number 1 at the Morelia-Linares tournament.
