Cop hands over jewellery
Sergeant Jiban Kumar Dutta handed over gold ornaments worth Rs 25,000 to Shakespeare Sarani police station on Monday morning. He found the jewellery in a private bus on route 21/1, plying between Behala and Sealdah. Dutta, of South Traffic Guard, intercepted the bus at the crossing of Lord Sinha Road and AJC Bose Road when it stopped to take on passengers, violating rules. He heard passengers talking about an abandoned box full of jewellery. Dutta promptly took the box in his custody and went to the police station with one of the conductors of the bus. Deputy commissioner of police (south) Ajay Kumar said the sergeant would be rewarded.
Mehak report
Additional chief judicial magistrate of Barrackpore court Gopal Chandra Karmakar on Monday sought a report on the investigation into the Mehak Ahuja case. The report has to be produced by April 25. Mehak, 25, was arrested on March 11 on charges of “disrupting a flight and causing harm on board”.
Mishap death
One person died and three others were injured in two road accidents since Sunday night. Tapan Samaddar, 32, died after the motorcycle he was riding rammed into a tree in Bishnupur, on Diamond Harbour Road, on Monday morning. Sanjay Gharai, riding pillion, was seriously injured. Both were rushed to a local hospital, where Samaddar died.
n another incident, a 40-year-old woman and a motorcyclist were injured in a mishap on Jawaharlal Nehru Road on Sunday night. Police said Archisman Chakraborty, who was riding a motorcycle, lost control and hit Koushalya Mallick. Both were admitted to SSKM Hospital.
Found dead
Sanjukta Das, 28, was found hanging at her Kali Kundu Lane home, in Howrah, on Monday morning. Her relatives alleged husband Somjit tortured her regularly.
