Teddy-bear

A koala bear is not a bear, but a marsupial (like a kangaroo). This mammal has a very limited diet. It is found primarily in the coastal regions of eastern Australia. Its cuddly, bear-like appearance, together with its flat leathery nose and big eyes, make it one of the most appealing of all creatures.

Unfortunately, its long silky fur has attracted the unwarranted attention of fur traders, which has contributed to its decline. This curious animal is totally arboreal and almost helpless on the ground because it has four hands with which to grip branches, rather than feet for walking on a flat surface. The koala bear is able to oppose both the first and second digits of its hands so that it seems to have two thumbs.

The koala eats only the leaves of just 12 species of the eucalyptus gum tree.

Therefore, its survival has been seriously threatened and endangered by forest clearance for the development of cities and farmlands.
