Outsmarting the crooks

Q: I am a student of Class XII (Arts). I would like to join the CID. Could you inform me about the selection procedure?

Mrigank Sen

A: The criminal investigation department (CID) is the investigative wing of the state police. In some states, it is also called CBCID (Crime Branch CID).

In contrast to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is an autonomous investigative agency under the Union government that deals with the investigation of criminal and corruption cases all over the country, the CID in a given state investigates criminal cases pertaining only to that particular state.

The state police and judicial bodies rely on the CID’s report for a true picture of a crime as it is equipped with proper investigative skills and techniques and is reputed for its impartiality due to its relative insulation from outside interference.

In general, police personnel are recruited at three levels — by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) through the Civil Services examination (IPS cadre), by state Public Service Commissions and by district police headquarters.

Some police personnel selected via any of these routes, are appointed to a regular CID post if they are able to show that they have the requisite aptitude.

No separate notifications are issued for recruitment to the CID. The eligibility for jobs of the level of sub-inspector and above is a bachelors degree.

The CID usually has its headquarters in the main office of the state police. In some states, it also has offices in the districts.

In West Bengal, the address of the CID office is: DIG-CID, IIIrd Floor, Bhawani Bhawan, Alipore, Calcutta-700027.
Telephone: 24506100; fax: 24506174; e-mail: mail@cidwestbengal.gov.in;

Overcome all challenges

Q: I am currently studying in Class X. I got 86 per cent marks in Class VIII. I am almost blind in my left eye. Do you think I am eligible for the physically handicapped category or should I take the board exams as an ordinary student ?

Konu Sarkar

A: Visual impairment in one eye is counted as only 25 per cent blindness. Those who have 40 per cent visual impairment are classified as visually handicapped.

Do consult your eye specialist for further clarification. However, a certificate of physical disability, issued by the chief medical officer of a district or the civil surgeon or a government hospital authorised to issue such certificates, is an admissible document.
You are a bright and capable student. Don’t let this prevent you from pursuing a successful career.

Plan your school’s future and guide it well
