Q:
I have done a BSc with chemistry,
English, maths and physics. I also have a BEd. At present,
I am working as a teacher in the Assam Rifles School. I
want to pursue an MSc in environmental science by correspondence.
Which institutes offer this course by correspondence and
have exam centres in the north-east? Also, my parents arent
happy with my decision to pursue higher studies. They think
teaching is a safer option. So what do I do to convince
them?
Jaganidhi Pokhrel
A: Perhaps your parents are not opposed to your pursuing higher studies but to your giving up your job.
You have not indicated if you want to discontinue teaching. Have you looked into the possibility of continuing with your teaching while you do your postgraduation?
You should be able to get all the information from the Net and even if there are no centres in the north-east, you can easily travel to the nearest one as and when required. Learning should carry on for life and certainly a teacher is to be encouraged to continue studying.
Q: I am appearing for the
Class X exam. I want to opt for social science at the Intermediate
level because I am interested in geography. However, I am
not sure about the job prospects after a graduation and a
postgraduation in geography. Could you give me information
on this? Should I opt for geology?
Zain Sulaiman
A: It is a little too early for you to think about jobs. So go ahead and take up geography. Subsequently, you will have a choice of specialising in one of the branches of geography. If you opt for mathematics along with geography, you will have a wider choice that would allow you to pursue subjects such as geographic information systems. Jobs related to geography include opportunities in travel and tourism, town planning, environment consultancy, forestry and others. However, do concentrate on your studies now, your general education has to be sound irrespective of the career path you choose later on.
