Jawan accused of molestation

A resident of Mahisbathan, Salt Lake, has lodged a complaint with police stating that a jawan of Central Reserve Police Force had molested her on Friday night. According to the complainant, the jawan was drunk and stopped her near Udayanpally, in Mahisbathan, around 8 pm while she was returning from the market. The police are yet to identify the jawan.

Police gheraoed

Residents of Hossain Shah Road, in Ekbalpore, stopped a police jeep and gheroed officers on Sunday morning, accusing them of stealing scrap iron from a local factory. The unit had closed down a few years back. The police said the officers had visited the factory on a tip-off. On seeing the cops, some youths who were stealing scrap iron fled, the officers said. They claimed they were taking the scrap iron pieces to the police station.

Body found

The body of a 32-year-old man was found floating in Subhas Sarobar on Sunday morning. Sajahan Alam, a taxi driver who lived on Narkeldanga Main Road, had committed suicide by hanging himself from the branch of a tree on the banks of the waterbody, said police. The branch broke under his weight. Local residents spotted the body and informed the police. The body has been sent for post-mortem.

Actor held

Tollywood actor Bhaswar Chattopadhaya was arrested at his Jadavpur home on Sunday for allegedly torturing his wife. He has been remanded in police custody for two days.

Scholarship

Rabindranath Tagore International Institute of Cardiac Sciences has instituted a scholarship to help financially-weak students from the state to study medicine. This year’s scholarships will be awarded on Tuesday.

Summer camp

Birla Industrial and Technological Museum will hold a “summer hobby” camp for students of classes V to X from May 24 to June 7. There are 40 seats.
