Truck kills man on Elgin Road

Calcutta, April 25: A speeding truck rammed into a roadside shop while taking a sharp turn at a south Calcutta intersection late tonight, killing one and seriously injuring three.

The pavement dwellers were huddled outside a pan shop at the Elgin Road-Ashutosh Mukherjee Road crossing around 11.45 pm when the truck hit them.

Two men and two women were taken to SSKM Hospital. One of the men died.

The police described the condition of the three in hospital as critical.

The driver of the truck has been arrested and charged with rash driving. The vehicle has been impounded.

Cathedral Rd death

Shibani Chowdhury, 50, was killed after being hit by a Matador van on Cathedral Road around 9.45 pm.

Police said the Citizen’s Park security guard, a resi-dent of Durga Das Lane near Tollygunge, was returning home after work.
