I was born on July 20, 1919, in Tuakau, New Zealand. On May 29, 1953, I accomplished something that no one had ever done before. Made a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire, a member of the Order of New Zealand and a Knight of the Order of the Garter, I am the only living New Zealander to appear on my country’s banknote.
