Chickens died of Ranikhet

The Ranikhet disease, not bird flu, is responsible for the large-scale death of chickens in Rajarhat, the animal resource development department said on Wednesday. “The recent death of chickens in Rajarhat has no connection with bird flu,” said J. Chakraborty, additional director of the department. “They died of the Ranikhet disease.” he state health department said around 200 chickens have died in a poultry in Chhatna, Rajarhat, over the past few days. “We have asked the animal resource department to send us a report. But the situation does not seem to be alarming,” said Sanchita Bakshi, director of health services.

Death by drowning

A 35-year-old man was found floating unconscious in the Deshbandhu Park swimming pool, in Ultadanga, on Wednesday evening. He was taken to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead. 32-year-old man was found floating unconscious at Netaji Subhas dock, under West Port police station, on Wednesday morning. He was taken to Medical College and Hospital, where he was declared dead.

Missing

Mujaufir Ahmed, 20, has been missing since Tuesday morning, when he went to bathe in the Hooghly. He is a resident of Battikol, under Garden Reach police station. Police have launched a search for him.

Darkness

Beniapukur and its neighbouring areas plunged into darkness on Wednesday evening for more than six hours, after a 133-KV feeder tripped. A CESC official said efforts were on to restore supply.

Award ceremony

Vice-president B.S. Sekhawat will attend the Pravasi Pratibha Puraskar 2007, organised by Rajasthan Foundation, in the city on May 31. Sarala Birla will be conferred the award.

Accident

A CTC bus, on the Rajabazar-Ghatakpukur route, fell into a ditch in Bantala on Wednesday night, injuring 15 passengers. Police said the driver had lost control. The injured were admitted to a local hospital.

Duo in net

Two youths were arrested in Madhaymgram, on the northern fringes of the city, on Wednesday for their alleged involvement in a dacoity. Two revolvers and a bomb were found in their possession.
