The following is a brief profile of former captain Chandu Borde, who was appointed as manager on Tuesday for Team India’s upcoming tours of Ireland and England.

Born: Poona (now Pune) on 21 July, 1934

Current age: 72 years, 326 days

Role: Allrounder (right hand middle-order batsman and right arm leg-break bowler)

Tests: 55 (1958-59 to 1969-70)

Runs: 3061 @ 35.59

Wickets: 52 @ 46.48

Test 100s: 5 (Best: 177* vs Pak, Madras, 1960-61)

5-wkt Test hauls: 1 (5/88 vs England, Madras, 1963-64)

Test catches: 37

First-class career (1952-53 to 1972-73): 251 matches; 12,805 runs @ 40.91; 100s-30; 331 wkts @ 27.32

Was manager during India’s tour of Pakistan in 1989-90. This series marked Sachin Tendulkar’s international debut. Krishnamachari Srikkanth was the captain.

Member of the selection committee: 1982-83, 1983-84.

Chairman of selectors: 1984-85, 1985-86, 1999-00 to 2001-2002.

Winner of the Arjuna award: 1966

Winner of Padma Bhushan: 2002

Winner of BCCI Lifetime achievement award : 2006
