I was born in Jodhpur but raised in Calcutta, with some years spent in the Assam valley. Though I spent only a few years in Assam, the memories of those days, in the backdrop of the beautiful valley, are very dear to me. Would you believe that I had a rabbit and a deer as pets? No wonder I loved it there.
Once in Calcutta, I studied in Modern High School for Girls. As a student I was above average. I paid attention in class and managed to secure good grades. I, however, admit that I was mischievous too. I regularly used to bunk classes. Since I was the head girl of our school, I managed to cover up for my absences with some excuse or the other.
I was also a great prankster, and my poor father was often at the receiving end of my pranks. One incident that I still remember vividly is when I managed to put salt and chilli powder in my fathers toothpaste one April Fools Day. The scolding I got after I was found out still sends shivers down my spine.
I was brought up in a joint family, amidst a lot of cousins. Pranks apart, we led a generally disciplined life as my father was very strict. On the other hand, my maternal grandfather would always spoil me rotten. As a result, I used to look forward to visiting Jodhpur and Mumbai, where he lived. He would give me a lot of pocket money whenever I went there and would threaten to punish me if I failed to spend it.
Entering the fashion industry was never a childhood dream, though my mother says that as a child, I loved playing with spools of thread. I guess I was destined to be a designer. Being artistic, I would often experiment with fabrics. This gradually developed into a passion.
I would urge each youngster never to forget his or her roots. And remember that there are no short cuts to success. Be dedicated and sincere in whatever you do, and success will follow.
