Hunt for Maoists

Purulia, June 28: Police today conducted raids at Biramdih and nearby areas looking for the Maoist group that set fire to the railway station yesterday.

Dilip Singh, a resident of Biramdih in Purulia, has been arrested for alleged involvement in the attack, superintendent of police Ashok Prasad said.

Senior police officials today visited Biramdih and questioned villagers and employees at the station.

They also held a meeting in Purulia town to discuss security.

Railway officials said the Maoists had damaged railway property worth around Rs 70 lakh.

Burdwan bail

Calcutta: Calcutta High Court has granted bail to 100 villagers of Purushottampur in Burdwan who had been arrested after a clash with police over land acquisition for the modernisation of the IISCO Steel Plant. They will be released on Friday. A trial court had earlier given bail to 26 others.

Mamata meet

Calcutta: Trinamul Congress chief Mamata Banerjee will meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Monday to convey her concerns at the government’s “forcible’’ acquisition of farmland. She will lead a “bhukha michhil” in the capital the next day.
