Bridge unveil put off again

The inauguration of the Second Vivekananda Bridge, scheduled for July 2, has been deferred yet again. Officials of CES, the project consultants, attributed the delay to some logistical problems, which they have asked the state government to look into. The inauguration is likely to take place later this week, said a CES official.

Pranab visit

Defence minister Pranab Mukherjee on Sunday visited Michel Rocard, a former Prime Minister of France, at CMRI hospital. Rocard, 76, on a cultural trip to the city, suffered brain haemorrhage and underwent a surgery at the hospital on Saturday. Hospital sources said his condition is stable.

Hospital

Finance minister Asim Dasgupta inspected RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on Sunday and visited several wards, an operating theatre and the paediatric unit. The minister later said the operating theatre needs a facelift.

Five arrested

Five men were arrested on Sunday for beating up two constables at the Sovabazar crossing last week. Police said the constables were beaten up for reportedly failing to stop a Matador that was fleeing after hitting a motorcycle.

Honour

Dipak Kumar De, a professor in the surgery department of West Bengal University of Animal and Fishery Sciences, has won the fellowship of National Academy of Veterinary Sciences. The honour was conferred on him in Bangalore on June 28.

Man returns

A.P. Singh, a resident of CG block of Salt Lake who had been missing since June 25, returned home on Sunday afternoon. Police said Singh had left home following a family dispute.

Brother held

Bibhas Srimani, in his early-40s, was arrested on Sunday on charges of masterminding the murder of his brother Prabhat, 52, on Friday. Prabhat, a bachelor, was found tied to his bed, with his throat slit, at the Srimanis’ home in Barasat, on the northern fringes.
