Civic office without water

The borough XII office of the Calcutta Municipal Corporation (CMC), at Santoshpur market, had been without water for the past four days. Employees alleged that the project and development wing of the CMC took no steps to restore the supply. On Monday, the employees hired a plumber and temporarily fixed the problem.

Flight grounded

A Calcutta-bound Alliance Air flight could not leave Guwahati, as it developed a snag and had to be grounded on Monday. The glitch could not be fixed till late in the evening. The airline arranged for the accommodation of the 45 passengers of the flight in Guwahati. They were told that they would be flown to Calcutta on Tuesday morning. n Alliance Air flight from Calcutta to Jorhat was delayed by 45 minutes during the day.

Fatal fall

Asim Sengupta, 50, died after falling off the roof of the South Dum Dum Municipality building, in Nagerbazar, on Monday afternoon. Sengupta worked in the water supply department of the municipality. Police said he had been suffering from psychological problems.

Suicide

A 39-year-old mentally-challenged man died after consuming acid on Monday. His family rushed him to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where he died around 3.40pm.

Book launch

Chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee launched Jalebi Management, All Stakeholders Can Enjoy a Bite, a book by Shombit Sengupta, on Monday. Addressing the gathering, Bhattacharjee said: “Shombit is a young artist from Kanchrapara who has made it big as a corporate strategist by combining his artistic skills with marketing strategies.” The book dwells on corporate management techniques.

Setu mishap

A man in his 40s was crushed under the wheels of a truck on the Vidyasagar Setu ramp in the Hastings area on Monday. The driver fled with his vehicle.

Gandhi visit

Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi on Monday visited CMRI hospital to meet Michel Rocard, a former Prime Minister of France. Rocard, who was operated upon on Saturday, has suffered a brain haemorrhage.

Hit by tram

Mohammed Salauddin, 23, was injured on Sunday after a tram grazed past him on Garden Reach Road around 2.35pm on Monday. Salauddin was admitted to SSKM Hospital with injuries on his right leg. Police said the incident occurred when he was crossing the road.

Found dead

Mahur Mahato, 27, was found unconscious in a printing workshop in Chitpur on Sunday. He was taken to RG Kar Hospital, where he was declared dead. Police said Mahato was a resident of Bankura.
