School funds

July 2: The Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) has set out to uplift the educational system across the four districts it administers with a satchel full of funds.

The council recently announced grants for lower primary, secondary and higher secondary schools in Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baksa and Udalguri.

Emanuel Mushahary, the BTC executive member in charge of education, said Rs 100,000 each would be given to 200 lower primary schools across the districts within the next two months.

He also said the education department would also release Rs 1.20 crore to 216 high schools.

The council has earmarked Rs 2 crore for the development of the District Institute of Education and Training and the Basic Training Centre in Kokrajhar.

Rs 2 crore each has been released for the Kokrajhar campus of Gauhati University at Debargaon and the Kokrajhar Government College.

A Rs 925-lakh plan has been proposed for the year 2007-08, which will be spent mainly for construction of schools, college, hostels and repair and renovation of old institutions.

A programme for distribution of cheques to schools in Baksa and Udalguri has been arranged on July 4 and July 14 respectively at Mushalpur and Udalguri.

Though the grants are ready, BTC chief Hagrama Mohilary is more concerned about lack of teachers.

“We are trying our best to fill up the posts of teachers and are awaiting financial approval from the state government,” he said.
