Krishnagar, July 3: A woman in Nadia today set her daughter-in-law on fire because she had delivered a second girl child.

Runu Sarkar, 26, who suffered 90 per cent burns, died on the way to Shaktinagar hospital.

She had returned to her in-laws’ home last night in Nakashipara, about 130 km from Calcutta, with her month-old baby. Runu’s police statement says her mother-in-law, Mayarani Sarkar, poured kerosene over her as she slept this morning.

She woke up to see the 55-year-old woman throw a lighted matchstick at her. Mayarani has been arrested.
