The eastern regional final of the eighth L.N. Birla inter-institutional debate was held on July 11, 2007, in Calcutta. Schools and colleges from Calcutta, Jamshedpur, Ranchi and Bhubaneswar took part. The topic for the house was: India is obsessed with Bollywood. The programme was inaugurated by Reimer Volker, director, Goethe Institute, Max Mueller Bhawan.
The speakers touched on topics like the Ash-Abhi relationship and their wedding and also discussed serious issues raised by movies such as Traffic Signal and Kalyug. The participants were judged by Kunal Pandit (theatre director, Padatik), Veena Lakhumalani (deputy director, urban services, CINI-ASHA) and Samarjit Guha (head of programmes, British Council Limited).
Vinayak Banerjee of Lakshmipat Singhania Academy, Calcutta, and Sakshi Arora of Presidency College, Calcutta, bagged the best speaker awards at the school and the university level respectively. The finals will be held in November.

An inter-school cultural event, Hello India, was held on June 28 and 29, 2007 at the Assembly of God Church, Sodepur, Asansol. The programme began with a dance item that showcased the cultures of different states of India. A spelling bee, cartoon craze and phoenix livened up the proceedings. Other schools like St Vincent’s and Loreto Convent, Burnpur, participated. It turned out to be a fun affair for students.

Delhi Public School, Ruby Park, is partnering NIIT to offer IT education to its students. Various programmes ranging from infrastructure consultancy to facilities management and multimedia content will be conducted for over 3,800 students. A state-of-the-art computer learning centre was also inaugurated by L. Balasubramanian, president, schools learning solutions business, NIIT recently. Through this initiative, NIIT will introduce its national level chess championship in DPS. Further, NIIT will also introduce a “digital art festival” to enable students to showcase their creative talent on the computer.
