Cong meet shuts out Andhra, Goa

New Delhi, July 28: A late evening meeting of the Congress Working Committee — the party’s highest policy-making body — was in a congratulatory mood and avoided any discussion on the police firing in Andhra Pradesh and the imminent loss of government in Goa.

Goa governor S.C. Jamir has asked for a floor test on Monday. With the non-Congress parties uniting, it looks like time is running out for chief minister Digambar Kamat.

The meeting, chaired by Sonia Gandhi and attended by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, congratulated both for their “leadership at achieving unity” and cooperation in ensuring the election of Pratibha Patil as President.

The CWC also congratulated the Prime Minister and the government for “successfully steering the nuclear agreement to a satisfactory conclusion”.

Asked about the police firing, which took eight lives, spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi said: “We hope and trust that the events of a few hours ago in respect of Andhra will settle down because it is very important to maintain peace and calm.”

A late night SMS from the Congress said Sonia had sought a detailed report from the chief minister.
