Kalighat arrests

Calcutta, Aug. 26: Nineteen people were held late tonight following a drunken brawl at Dompatti in Kalighat.

The first police team to reach the area, where most people earn their living from the burning ghat, was pelted with stones. Additional for-ces had to be called in.

Baby found

Krishnagar: A newborn was found near a drain at Shaktinagar District Hospital here. Some Group D staff saw the baby wrapped in a plastic packet and took her into the hospital, about 90km from Calcutta. Doctors said the girl’s condition was stable.

Boy in oven

Bolpur: A three-year-old boy died after he fell into an oven while playing in the courtyard of his house in Nalhati. Minjanul Sheikh’s father pulled him out of the pit where paddy was being boiled to make puffed rice. He had suffered 90 per cent burns by then.
