About beetles

Beetles are the most successful life forms on this planet with more than 3,50,000 known species! They are extremely interesting creatures that come in all kinds of shapes, sizes and colours.

The bright red ladybird beetle tastes foul to predators (because of the alkaloids in the food they consume). The rhinoceros beetle, one of the strongest species of insects, is capable of punching holes through very thick materials. Some rhinoceros beetles can also lift up to 850 times their own weight! Bombardier beetles shoot jets of burning acid when provoked or are in danger.

Another species of beetle is called the dung beetle. These beetles are known to gather animal manure, roll it into a ball and offer it to their mates! This smelly ball is then served as food to their young ones.

In fact, fireflies aren’t really flies, they are beetles. Some other beetles such as click beetles can also produce bright lights.
