Light it up

Maharashtra Institute of Technology (MIT), Pune, has launched a unique course in lighting technology management. The course integrates academic and work-based learning to equip students with engineering skills.

The modules for the course have been developed in close association with industry bodies such as the Electrical Lamp and Component Manufacturers’ Association of India (ELCOMA) and the Indian Society of Lighting Engineers (ISLE). With an estimated market of over Rs 8,600 crore, the lighting industry is witnessing tremendous growth today. However, there is an acute shortage of skilled personnel in this sector. Therefore, this course aims to fill that vacuum.

Bringing cheer

On August 11, 2007, members of Interact Club of Nopany Vidyalaya, Calcutta, visited Mulvany House at Park Circus. The home shelters 17 old and neglected women. The youngsters managed to bring a smile to the wrinkled faces with a short entertainment programme. The day ended in a tearful farewell as the women were overwhelmed with all the attention.

Green power

Renewable Energy Club of the Heritage Institute of Technology, Calcutta, undertook a field trip to the West Bengal Renewable Energy Development Agency (WBREDA) complex in Salt Lake on August 11, 2007. The excursion was highly informative, as the club members, comprising biotechnology and chemical engineering students, got an interesting insight into the various non-conventional energy resources in use.

Amitava Sen, superintendent engineer and T.K. Hazra, additional director, WBREDA (which is the nodal agency of the ministry of new and renewable energy), explained the various procedures involved in the running of these power plants. All in all, it turned out to be an extremely educative trip.
