Power cut at BC Roy hospital

BC Roy Memorial Hospital for Children was plunged into darkness for an hour early on Sunday following a cable fault. The functioning of almost all departments, including the emergency, was affected. The guardians of the children admitted in the hospital ransacked several departments in protest. The situation was brought under control after police arrived. ower went off around 1.30am. M.K. Chatterjee, the medical superintendent of the hospital, said back-up supply from generators had kept emergency services, like the life-support systems, running. “CESC was immediately informed,” he said. The superintendent, however, admitted that the power cut caused “considerable discomfort” to the patients and their relatives.

Trader suicide

Aloke Paul, 40, reportedly committed suicide by hanging himself at his factory in Belghoria, on the northern fringes of the city, late on Saturday. Police said Paul, who ran a candle factory, had been suffering from depression following a funds crunch. No suicide note was found.

Man injured

A 55-year-old man was injured after being hit by an autorickshaw on SN Banerjee Road on Sunday. He was rushed to Medical College and Hospital, where his condition was critical. The vehicle has been impounded and the driver arrested.

Missing

Subhas Das, 70, a Kankurgachhi resident, has been missing since Saturday afternoon. Police said Das left home to visit a relative but did not return. Das lives with his wife, while the couple’s only son is in the US.

Robbed on bus

A conductor of a private bus on route 28 was robbed of Rs 1,900 near Sealdah flyover late on Saturday. Police said the criminal, armed with a chopper, boarded the bus and forced the conductor to hand over the money. There were no passengers on the bus.

Conference

The regional conference of the Airport Authorities Officers’ Association on Sunday discussed the impact of the shortage of manpower on the proposed infrastructure upgrade at the city airport. The number of officials at the city airport has dwindled from 142 to 87 in the past few years.
