Sachin likely to drop in on Day II

Calcutta: Sachin Tendulkar is likely to be present on Day II of the WTA Sunfeast Open at the Netaji Indoor Stadium. The main draw begins on Monday.

Besides watching live action, Sachin will take part in Fun Tennis — one of the promotional events for the tournament’s third edition. The former India captain is a keen follower of tennis, with John McEnroe and Pete Sampras being among his favourites.

The court-laying at the Netaji Indoor Stadium is nearing completion with the synthetic surface getting a coat of paint. The damp weather, though, has tournament director Jaidip Mukerjea a bit concerned.

“The drying up process is getting delayed because of the weather… We’re trying to get it ready by tomorrow (Friday) morning so that the players can get a feel of it by the evening,” Mukerjea said.

The practice courts at the Khudiram Anushilan Kendra are far from complete. Parts of the surface have come off, though Subramaniyam — the man in charge of laying the courts — said it was no concern at all. “Those areas will be okay once we apply the binding material and synthetic paint.”

The wild cards for this Tier III event are expected to go to Tara Iyer, Isha Lakhani and Ankita and Sana Bhambri.
