9 killed in crash

Islampur, Sept. 27: Nine persons, three of them schoolboys, were killed when a Tata Sumo carrying them hit a stationary truck on NH-31 in Islampur, some 500km from Calcutta today. Four boys were injured.

Twin murders

Malda: A 52-year-old widow and her daughter were found murdered in their house on Thursday. Maya Sarkar and her daughter Anusha had been strangled and then hacked to death, police said.

Girl stabbed

Barasat: A man allegedly stabbed his seven-year-old daughter and then attempted suicide after a quarrel with his wife. Bikram Nath, 30, suspected wife Lopamudra had an illicit affair.

Tapasi case

Chandernagore: Suhrid Dutta and Debu Malik, both accused in the Tapasi Malik murder, have been remanded in seven days’ judicial custody.

Body found

Uttarpara: Police found the decomposed body of 80-year-old Anita Dutta after residents complained of a foul smell emanating from her home. Her 45-year-old mentally-challenged son was sitting beside the body. The police have taken him away.

Train tiff

Malda: A college student was allegedly pushed off the Kanchankanya Express by a ticket examiner as he did not have a ticket. His friends blocked the tracks demanding the TTE be punished.
