Newborn found in Ekbalpore
A newborn girl was found lying on Ekbalpore Road on Thursday morning. The baby, wrapped in a piece of cloth, was spotted by local youths who informed police. The girl was later handed over to Sukanya, an NGO.
Harassment
The chief municipal health officer, Debdwaipayan Chattopadhyay, has submitted a report to municipal commissioner Alapan Bandyopadhyay, stating that civic food inspectors were being harassed by shop-owners while trying to collect food samples for tests. In some areas, the report said, the shop-owners are being backed by the local councillors.
Roadblock
Residents of Naktala blocked NSC Bose Road for an hour from 3pm on Thursday, demanding steps to tackle waterlogging during high tide. Local CPM councillor Biren Ghosh said four pumps have been activated to drain out water. “It will take some time to work out a permanent solution,” he said.
Protest
A group of passengers blocked the railway tracks in Duttapukur, on the northern fringes of the city, on Thursday, demanding a local train from the station in the morning. The passengers alleged that they could not board the Habra local during office hours as it is too crowded. The blockade was lifted after the railway authorities assured the protesters that their demand would be looked into.
Fair
The North 24-Parganas zilla parishad will organise a fair in Barasat on October 2 to enable self-help groups of women to sell their products.
Sleaze racket
Two men and four women were arrested following a raid on a Bhowanipore parlour on Wednesday evening. Police said they were involved in a sex racket. The parlour owner fled.
Suicide
Ila Maity, 28, was found hanging in her first-floor apartment in Barrackpore on Thursday evening. Police said Maity had been suffering from depression following a break-up with her boyfriend. |
