Hoarding check

Calcutta, Oct. 24: The enforcement branch has been asked to be vigilant against hoarding by traders, the government said today.

Chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee chaired a meeting to discuss rising prices and instructed the chief secretary to get cracking.

Ration rage: Police burst teargas shells to drive away a mob that looted a ration shop at Pabankati in North 24-Parganas’ Swarupnagar, 70km from the city, today.

In Joynagar, South 24-Parganas, a ration dealer was beaten up and his shop set on fire.

City shooting

Calcutta: A cyclist in his mid-30s was shot at in Regent Park on Wednesday night. Police could not identify the person, but said his condition was critical.

Leader held

Durgapur: RSP Burdwan district committee member Jamuna Pas- wan has been arrested in connection with the murder of Eastern Coalfields assistant manager Amin Karmakar. An ECL security officer had been arrested earlier.

Cop thrashed

Asansol: Residents of Sun View Park here beat up sub-inspector Ranjit Das. He had allegedly demanded money from a family to “settle” a theft charge levelled by a relative’s office.
