‘Mech’ a move

Founded in 1957, the Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT) is known for its excellence in shaping world-class engineers. Known until 1974 as the Manipal Engineering College, the institute was among the first self-financed colleges of the country. It started off by offering a bachelors degree in just one discipline — civil engineering — but now it offers graduation programmes in 12 disciplines and postgraduate courses in nine.

MIT, a constituent institution of Manipal University, is set in a 160-acre campus amidst picturesque surroundings.

Eligibility

Applicants should have passed their Plus Two or equivalent exam with physics, mathematics and English as main subjects and chemistry, biotechnology, computer science, biology or engineering drawing as optional subjects. They should have got a minimum of 50 per cent marks in physics, mathematics and the optional subject.

Entrance exam

Admissions are on the basis of performance in the MAHE Under Graduate Entrance Test (UGET) that is held in Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Bhopal, Bhubaneshwar, Calcutta, Chandigarh, Chennai, Coimbatore, Delhi, Ernakulam, Gangtok, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Lucknow, Manipal, Mangalore, Mumbai and Pune. Only those who get above 50 per cent in UGET will be considered for admission.

Pattern of exam

The two-and-a-half hour UGET consists of 240 multiple-choice questions. There are 60 questions on physics, 60 on chemistry, 80 on maths while the rest are on English and general aptitude. The questions are based on the Plus Two syllabus.

How to prepare

There are many engineering entrance guides available in the market which students can consult. Practise the multiple-choice questions within a time limit. Your concepts should be clear because the objective-type questions generally assess your depth of understanding and analytical ability.

Students can consult Physics by Lodiwala, N.N. Ghosh and other publications by Bharti Bhawan. For chemistry, refer to books by Krishna, Arihant, Ratan and Dinesh publications. Practise maths from R.D. Sharma, Krishna, Arihant and Jai Narain publications. For English, look up the grammar books by Nesfield and Wren and Martin as well as Objective English by Prasad and English is Easy by Chetan Anand. Do usage and comprehension exercises from the SAT guide by Barron.
