Jawan shoots seniors

Srinagar, Nov. 10: A jawan shot dead two of his seniors with his service rifle in Jammu today.

Sepoy Vivek Kumar Sharma, undergoing training at the Balra Corps Battle School in Bhaderwah, has been arrested.

Army sources said this was the sixth incident of fragging — an American term for a soldier killing a colleague — in the state this year.

Subedar Siju Alex and Hawaldar Brij Bihari fell to Sharma’s bullets allegedly after an altercation at the army school.

Defence spokesperson Lt Col S.D. Goswami said the incident took place at 11.50am. “The accused soldier has been arrested and we have ordered a court of inquiry. We are ascertaining why he killed his seniors.”

Fragging continues to haunt security forces in the Valley despite various stress-busting techniques and tough action against erring soldiers.

Major P. Alexander was killed by sepoy Mohan Munda in the Gurez sector near the Line of Control in Kashmir on July 24. He was the highest-ranking officer to die this year in such an incident.

Several soldiers and paramilitary personnel have committed suicide.
