Anupama Varma in the city. Picture by Rashbehari Das

If most of us haven’t seen her in a while, it’s because Anupama Varma is busy with her own productions. “I’ve been hosting a travel show for an international channel, doing my own musical and fashion shows and some plays and live events,” says the pretty lady, who was in town for a student competition.

While we know her best from reality show Bigg Boss, Anupama is willing to talk to t2 about anything but “that nightmare”...

Are you doing any item numbers after Chameli?

I don’t like to say item number. I like to call it a special appearance. I’m doing one in Woodstock Villa, Sikander Kher’s (son of Anupam Kher) debut film.

Don’t you think item numbers have a stigma attached to them?

Not at all. It’s great fun… everybody wants to do it. One song can take all the limelight and it can be your own hit song.

Does Bolly beckon?

Honestly, I’ve never been in the thick of Bolly. When I did my debut film Grahan, it took four-and-a-half years to release and I was under a contract not to sign any other film in-between. I didn’t realise that I was losing out on my career. I think that made me lose interest in all that Bolly excitement.

So if you get a Bolly offer now, you wouldn’t consider it?

Maybe if something really good comes up.

Do you think showing skin is okay in your first film?

There’s a thin line between sexy and vulgar. If it’s in your face, it’s vulgar. I wore a sari in Bheegi bheegi raaton mein… it was such a sensual video and my favourite. Even my dad’s favourite!

Who are you currently dating?

I’m globetrotting so much that I don’t have the time. So yes, I’m single! But I believe in marriage and relationships, not in frivolous ties.

What happened to Aryan Vaid?

That was a nightmare. Don’t even bring up the subject. I was a victim of so many things.

Do you keep in touch with anyone from Bigg Boss?

On and off. We call once in a while… everyone’s busy doing their own thing. I did make some good friends.

Don’t you think Bigg Boss is the reason most people know who you are today?

I didn’t see a single episode, I wanted to leave it all behind me. And I got no work gain from Bigg Boss. The only good thing is that people got to know me as a person. Even today, I meet people who talk to me like they know me. Sometimes I feel exposed.

What do you think of reality shows?

See, there’s always some twisted reality and masala added. But BB was 100 per cent real, it was the toughest show and there’s nothing like being locked in for days…

What does it take to become a supermodel?

Right now there is an influx of too many models. They come starry-eyed and it’s the easiest profession to get carried away by because it makes you feel larger than life. You must take it with a pinch of salt.

Your forte?

I’m impromptu and come across best when spontaneous.

Your weakness?

I love sweets. In fact, I got late just now because I stopped at Ganguram’s! I told my friends I want to pick up some sweets for family but they were like, “We know you want to eat them yourself.”

What’s your style statement?

Anything I’m confident wearing. My wardrobe must-haves are blue jeans, white shirt and some formal shirts. I don’t like wearing make-up, maybe just some kajal and lip-gloss.

Any beauty secrets?

I have never done a facial. You usually tend to do what your mother has and my mom has never done one. My gym is my natural facial — working out flushes out toxins. Really, my skin looks the best when I work out.

If you would change one thing about yourself?

It would have to be my highly stupidly sentimental nature!
