Mishap kills one

A woman died and eight persons were injured when the autorickshaw they were travelling in was hit by a trailer on National Highway 6, in Uluberia, on Thursday evening. The injured have been admitted to hospital. olice said the autorickshaw was plying down a wrong lane. The driver of the trailer fled. Local residents blocked the road, alleging that the police had reached the spot late.

Fest halted

The DJ night at Xavotsav, the annual festival of St Xavier’s College, was called off on account of overcrowding on Thursday evening. Principal Father P.C. Mathew declared the fest closed fearing crowd trouble, following a mini stampede at the gates.

Train service

Two trains from Calcutta to the Northeast will be short-terminated in the next few days for security reasons in view of Republic Day. The Kanchenjungha Express, which runs up to Guwahati, will end at New Jalpaiguri on January 24, 25 and 26. The Dibrugarh-bound Kamrup Express will terminate at Guwahati on January 24, 25, 26 and 27.

Flu fear

Bird flu fear gripped Phoolbagan on Thursday after residents spotted two dead crows. Samples from the carcasses were sent to the veterinary hospital in Belgachhia for tests. “The symptoms suggest the deaths were natural,” said chief civic health officer Deb Dwaipayan Chattopadhyay.

New rifle

An indigenous brand of combat rifle was unveiled at the Ordnance factory in Icchapore on Thursday. It will be handed over to the army for trial soon.

Airport arrest

Forty labourers were arrested on Thursday for staying illegally at Calcutta airport.

Scribe dead

Journalist Somen Mukherjee, 67, died of a cardiac arrest at Subodh Mitra Cancer Hospital, in Salt Lake, on Thursday morning. He had been suffering from cancer. Mukherjee was chief reporter of Amrita Bazar Patrika till it was closed down in 1996. Earlier, he was with Hindusthan Standard.
