Irrigation boss in cop net

Patna, Jan. 24: Raids conducted today in residences of Bihar’s minor irrigation chief engineer Awadhesh Prasad Singh yielded property worth crores including Rs 55 lakh in cash and share papers amounting to Rs 50 lakh.

The special vigilance team known as the Corruption Linked Efforts for Affirmative Action (CLEAN) carried out raids on the engineer’s three establishments; his Patna and Muzaffarpur homes and his relative’s house at Samastipur in north Bihar.

Inspector-general of CLEAN A.K. Upadhyay said the recovered papers showed that Singh possessed flats and lands in Noida, Bangalore and Calcutta, besides Muzaffapur and Patna.

The government has initiated the suspension of the engineer in question and has initiated proceedings against him, in the wake of the raids.

The vigilance team members revealed that the party also seized two bank lockers and a bank account belonging to Singh. Sources also revealed that several “incriminating” documents were also recovered.

“The raids are still continuing. We can furnish further details only after we complete our count,” said a team member.

The Nitish Kumar government had constituted CLEAN comprising retired CBI officers and police officers last year. The special body has so far nabbed a senior IAS official and an officer in the rank of a director-general for corruption.
