The play: Bhagoban Ja Koren Ta, a musical with 15 songs. The latest Theatre Workshop production has been scripted by Ashok Mukhopadhyay, inspired by a Rajasthani folk tale.
The venue: Madhusudan Mancha; March 12, 6.30pm.
The plot: The title refers to the old saying Bhagoban ja koren ta mongoler jonyo (whatever god does is for the best). At the heart of the play are two traders. One is the rich and powerful Nagar Seth, the other is his son Chhota Seth who wants to be declassed in order to mingle and live with the poor. But no matter what he does, it boomerangs and makes him more rich and famous. So even when he snatches the kings turban and stamps on it to offend him, it turns out that he has actually saved the monarchs life by killing a snake hiding inside the turban.
Directorspeak: The moral of the story is that people these days can do no wrong because whatever they do is for their own good. Things happening around us are almost ridiculous and only a satire or comedy can encapsulate the situation. Besides, after doing a number of serious plays we needed a break, says Mukhopadhyay, who draws on the folk traditions of various regions.
