Isha falls in Round I
Serena and Venus Williams in Bangalore on Tuesday

Bangalore: India’s Isha Lakhani crashed out in the first round of the WTA Bangalore Open on Tuesday.

She was ousted by fellow-qualifier, Agnes Szatmari of Romania, 6-2, 6-3 in an evening session match of the $6,00,000 Tier II event.

Seventh seed Vera Zvonareva of Russia rallied to beat Monica Niculescu of Romania 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.

Israel’s Tzipora Obziler had it easy over Angelika Bachmann of Germany with a 6-2, 6-3 win.

China’s Peng Shuai made short work of Anne Kremer of Luxemburg 6-1, 6-2 and Sanda Mamic of Crotia defeated Chan Yung-Jan of Chinese Taipei 6-2, 6-2.

Anastasia Rodionova of Russia got the better of China’s Sun Tiantian 4-6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 while Olga Savchuk of Ukraine defeated Katie ’Brien of England 6-4, 2-6, 7-5.

In doubles play, Venus and Serena Williams sailed into the second round with a 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 win over Andrea Ehritt-Vanc of Romania and Tamarine Tanasugarn of Thailand.

China’s Ji Chunmel Ji and Sun Shengnan Sun beat Bachmann and Belgian Feys Debbrich 2-6, 7-5, 10-7.

Rodionova and countrywoman Yaroslava Shvedova defeated India’s Sunitha Rao and Australia’s Monique Adaczak 6-0, 6-1.
