Why do some animals hibernate? A number of animals hibernate to escape severe winters, when their food becomes extremely scarce. Hibernation is a state of very deep sleep, where the animal saves energy by not moving for months on end, surviving on sugars stored in their liver and by the fat that has been built up during the summer. During hibernation, breathing almost stops and the heartbeat is slow. This enables the animal to survive by expending minimal energy.
