Skin screen

If everyone knows you have been out in the sun because your cheeks are bright red, or if you suffer dryness and burning despite cleansing, toning and moisturising, chances are you have sensitive skin. The sure-shot symptom? Irritation resulting from the use of the usual cosmetics.

“Our recent surveys show more than 50 per cent of people claim to have sensitive skin,” says Snehal Sriram, head, medical services, Kaya Skin Clinic. At the launch of Kaya’s Sensitive Skin Line on Thursday, which includes face cleanser, moisturiser and sunscreen, Snehal explained how to deal with skin trouble...

What causes sensitive skin?

A number of reasons can result in sensitive skin:

1) Genetic tendency

2) Medical causes

3) Irritation to cosmetics

4) Prolonged exposure to pollution.

What are the symptoms of sensitive skin?

Itching, burning, stretching, stinging, dryness, sensitivity to heat, redness and swelling are the signs of sensitive skin. If a product causes burning of the eyes, it could be a symptom.

What should you look for in a skincare product if you have sensitive skin?

Fragrance or perfumes have compounds that are harmful. So opt for fragrance-free products. Avoid coloured cosmetics and look for organic or mineral-based make-up. Always go for powdered compact and avoid heavy moisturisers.

How is the awareness level amongst your patients?

The awareness level is very high. Women are more concerned. Men are way behind, perhaps because they have thicker skin and are less prone to problems.
