‘A perfect launch for me’
Hair pulled back into a bun, vermillion smudged on her forehead, a cotton sari draped carelessly and the pallu hiding her bump — she’s nothing like the Riya Sen we know. Following in the footsteps of elder sis Raima, the Bollywood hottie has cast aside her glam doll image and gone in for a makeover with Rituparno Ghosh’s Bengali film Abohoman.

Abohoman also marks the Tollywood debut of Suchitra Sen’s younger granddaughter. Riya plays Tiya in the film, the young bride of Jisshu Sengupta and a mom-to-be. “I have always wanted to start my career with Bengali films. Abohoman has given me a great opportunity. Rituparno Ghosh is a great director and it’s a perfect launch for me,” said Riya, in between the shots at an Alipore house.

“I sport a very simple look in the film. I wear simple cotton saris. And I wear no make-up. I wake up in the morning and head straight for the sets and start shooting without applying anything on my face,” she laughed.

It’s only work for Riya for the next six days. “I have no time for anything else. But I’m very excited about the role; it’s very different. In fact, whatever roles I have portrayed so far on screen were all very different,” she adds. Back in Bollywood, a couple of Hindi films are awaiting her. “I have finished shooting for K Sera Sera’s Tara Sitara with Arjun Punj and Samir Karnik’s Heroes with Sunny Deol and Salman Khan. Both are comedies. There’s also a children’s film Zor Lagaa Ke… Haiyya with Mithun Chakraborty, Mahesh Manjrekar and Seema Biswas. That’s still on the floors. Then I will start shooting for Subhas Ghai’s forthcoming film Paying Guest with Suniel Shetty and Shreyas Talpade. And I’m also doing a Telugu film,” added Riya.
