Fathers & sons
He has transformed the sexy Sameera Reddy into a simple housewife and the suave Rahul Bose into a middle-class Bangali bhadrolok. He has also got Mithun Chakraborty to add his own “magic”. Buddhadeb Dasgupta is all praise for his Kaalpurush cast. A t2 chat...
Why did you choose the story of a father-son relationship?
My films are never autobiographical but I have always incorporated things from my life. I realised that there’s a lot that all fathers want to tell their sons and all sons want to say something to their fathers. Even I had a lot to say to my father. In Kaalpurush, Mithun plays the father and Rahul is his son.
What made you cast Rahul?
The only film of Rahul’s that I had seen was English August. Later of course he made me see his other films as well. I was aware of the fact that Rahul didn’t belong to the class I was trying to capture in Sumanto. But he has worked very hard. He changed his Bengali diction in order to dub his lines! The other reason for casting Rahul is because he still has a fresh face. He is someone who’s withdrawn. So, he could be Sumanto in every way.
And Sameera?
I saw Sameera for the first time at a hotel in Mumbai and I knew immediately that she would play Sumanto’s wife. You can tell from Sameera’s face that she is very ambitious, like her character Supriya. She wants to make it to the top. When I wanted to cast her people told me that she was an item girl. Even my unit members discouraged me. But I was sure about her. And when people saw Sameera by my side on the first day of the shoot, no one could recognise her!
This is your second film with Mithun after Tahader Katha...
Mithun is more mature now, more cerebral and sensible. He has the magic of acting. He can completely change his mannerisms. And he did everything for Kaalpurush. He was the assistant director, spot boy, the light man. He would even pull the trolley!
Kaalpurush is releasing after a year-and-a-half. How does it feel?
I am very relieved. People may feel that I am happy that my film is travelling to the festivals. But I make films so that my people can watch them. I felt terrible when Kaalpurush got stuck because of the producers (Jhamu Sughand).... Swapner Din is releasing in June.
What’s next for you?
I am starting my new film Janala (Window) in August. It is about our love for our school. It’s about how a man who visits his school after a long time wants to do something for the dilapidated building. So, he makes a window and takes it to the school but the headmaster refuses to accept it. The window then becomes his world. Rahul (Bose) is very keen on doing the role.
