Do you know why the American flag is called the “Old Glory?” In 1831, while leaving his ship, Captain Driver of Massachusetts was gifted a beautiful new flag with 24 stars. When it unfurled in the ocean breeze, he exclaimed “Old Glory,” and the flag came to be known as Old Glory. In 1837, Tennessee seceded from the Union in the civil war. At that time rebels tried to destroy the flag, but didn’t succeed, because of the Captain. In 1862, when the Union triumphed, Captain Driver raised the flag over the state capitol to celebrate this victory and ever since it has been called Old Glory.
