Who is the most translated author in the world? Unescos Index Translationum Top 50 has a surprise in store for Sherlock Holmes fans like me. Miss Marple and Hercule Poirot rule the roost. With a staggering 6,362 translations, dame Agatha Christie is well ahead of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1,871) and Shakespeare (3,435). There are other women in the Index. Among them, Enid Blyton (3,433) and — believe it or not — Barbara Cartland (3,315). Wonder why P.D. James is still missing from that list? And surprise, surprise, no J.K. Rowling. At the least not yet.
