Alipore robbery

Calcutta, June 14: A gang of four entered a house on Alipore Road last night, robbed an elderly couple of gold jewellery and left them tied up in the store-room of the two-storey house.

Police said the four, aged between 25 and 30, entered the residence of B.C. Lamburiya around 12.10pm. They were apparently looking for Sankar, the domestic help who had been working with the family for a year and a half and was now on leave.

Lamburiya’s wife opened the door, the gang brandished a gun and overpowered them. They escaped with 24-36gm gold jewellery, a camera, a mobile phone and Rs 2,000 in cash. Alipore police have registered a case of robbery.

Mishap kills 4

Behrampore: Four government employees posted at Bharatpur Hospital died when their car collided with a truck at Kalabagan, 250km from Calcutta. Samar Biswas, 32, Debashish Adhikary, 32, Abhishek Bhattacharya, 30, and Somnath Hazra, 25, were on their way to a conference in Behrampore.

Salt Lake body

Calcutta: The body of a 45-year-old man was found in a BE block building in Salt Lake on Saturday. “Kanad Keny used to live alone. We are awaiting the post-mortem report,” said Supratim Sarkar, North 24-Parganas SP. There were no external marks of injury. Keny, a divorcee from Mizoram, had worked in the Japanese consulate and in a university in Japan. Neighbours alerted the police after his flat remained closed for four days.

Wire deaths

Howrah: Three boys were eloctrocuted and one was seriously injured on Saturday while playing in a building in Pilkhana, 10km from Calcutta. They came in contact with wires used to tap electricity illegally. The incident triggered protests by residents. The landlord fled.

Baby screen

Panaji (PTI): Goa has become the first state to have mandatory screening of newborns to identify untreated metabolic disorders. A series of medical examinations will be conducted on newborn babies to test for 50 such disorders.
